After reading Cloudflare’s EmDash article, I originally planned to turn it into a short LinkedIn observation. It was not just another product announcement for a new CMS. The article included direct commentary on the WordPress ecosystem, plugin risks, maintenance costs, and platform architecture. From the perspective of an infrastructure platform and external competitor, it captured many issues that WordPress agencies and maintenance teams often encounter in real-world projects. 1

Later, WordPress 7.0 was officially released, bringing AI Client, Abilities API, Connectors, dashboard interface updates, Visual Revisions, and PHP version requirements into the broader discussion around website maintenance and long-term site management. 2

This article looks at both developments together: Cloudflare’s external critique and challenge on one side, and the management foundations WordPress 7.0 is moving toward on the other. In a business website context, the question is not only whether WordPress is outdated. It is also whether a website is being treated as a system that needs ongoing maintenance, updates, management, and room for future growth.

Why Discuss WordPress 7.0 Through EmDash?

In the original EmDash article, Cloudflare describes it as the “spiritual successor” to WordPress and directly discusses plugin security, serverless architecture, AI-native workflows, and modern CMS design. These technical details may not be something every website owner needs to study in depth, but the issues behind them are worth paying attention to: WordPress’s strengths and weaknesses often come from the same open ecosystem.

From a WordPress perspective, this is easy to understand. Its large plugin ecosystem, broad theme selection, customizability, portability, and familiar talent pool allow WordPress to support many kinds of websites, from brand sites and content publications to eCommerce, multilingual, membership, and booking-based projects. The same flexibility, however, also means a website has to deal with plugin quality, license status, update cycles, security risks, hosting environment, and compatibility management.

That is what made Cloudflare’s article stand out to me. It did not simply dismiss WordPress as an outdated tool. Instead, it used an external point of view to surface many issues that WordPress maintenance teams already understand, but that many website owners tend to underestimate.

WordPress 7.0 gives this discussion another angle. It does not deliver every future-facing idea all at once, but AI Client, Connectors, dashboard updates, Visual Revisions, PHP 7.4 minimum requirements, and related changes show that WordPress is still moving toward a more modern management foundation. This shifts the conversation from “what is wrong with WordPress?” to a more practical question: as website systems become more complex, how should business websites be managed over the long term?

What EmDash Reveals: WordPress Flexibility and Maintenance Costs Come From the Same Ecosystem

The more valuable part of Cloudflare’s EmDash article is that it uses an external platform and competitor’s perspective to highlight a long-standing tension at the heart of WordPress.

WordPress has clear strengths: a mature open-source core, a large plugin and theme ecosystem, a long history in content management, broad hosting support, and a large pool of designers, developers, marketers, and site managers who already understand how it works. They happen because the site was treated as a quick way to build a website, rather than as part of a long-term operating system. WordPress flexibility is not free. It requires management costs, and it requires someone who knows which parts need regular checks, updates, backups, and control.

Point of WordPress 7.0: Not Just More Features, but a Shift in the Foundation of Website Management

If we treat WordPress 7.0 as just another major version update, we risk missing its broader significance.

Beyond dashboard interface changes and block editor details, this release is especially worth noting because AI, external service connections, content editing, and developer APIs are moving closer to the core layer. Website owners may not feel all of these changes immediately after updating, but they will shape how websites are managed, extended, and automated in the future.

WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong” Main Update Overview

The official WordPress 7.0 release post describes this version as a foundational step for bringing AI into the WordPress experience. It highlights updates such as AI Client, centralized external connection management, Modernized Dashboard 3, Command Palette 4, Visual Revisions 5, Design Agility (including design tools and new blocks) 6.

I was also hoping WordPress 7.0 would bring more mature collaboration features, especially the ability to leave notes directly on a paragraph, image, button, or layout block inside the block editor.

This would be very useful for website maintenance. In content updates, page adjustments, or design revisions, the challenge is often not whether a project management tool exists. It is whether a revision request can be tied clearly to the exact part of the page.

Ke2B already uses project management tools, internal and external communication records, automated notifications, task histories, and maintenance records to manage work status. These tools are good for responsibility, progress, and history. But when a client wants to refer to a specific paragraph, image, button, or section, screenshots, marked-up images, page links, and extra explanations are often still needed.

WordPress Phase 3 already focuses on Collaboration, with directions such as draft sharing, inline block comments, review assignments, version management, and real-time collaboration. These are not niche requests. They are natural needs as content management systems move toward mature workflows.

However, full real-time collaboration was not included in the WordPress 7.0 core release. In its May 8, 2026 update, the WordPress team explained that the feature was removed from 7.0 due to issues such as surface area, race conditions, server load, memory efficiency, and recurring bugs found through fuzz testing.

That is disappointing, but understandable for production sites. Collaboration matters, but core stability matters just as much. If multi-user collaboration is not stable enough, adding it too early could create more maintenance risk.

WordPress 7.0 does not deliver collaboration all at once, but content workflows are clearly becoming a key area to watch. For Ke2B, external project management still matters. If WordPress later adds stronger in-editor notes, reviews, and collaboration tools, content maintenance can become more precise and communication costs can be reduced.

Major Updates Reflect Everyday Maintenance Readiness

After WordPress 7.0 launched, some Ke2B-managed client sites have already been updated. Handling major updates with confidence does not mean there is no risk. It means hosting, backups, plugin licenses, update cycles, security, performance, and functional checks are already part of regular maintenance.

For sites with little ongoing maintenance, major updates often become stress tests. After updating, issues may appear: outdated PHP, long-neglected plugins, incompatible themes, cache display problems, failed forms, missed SEO settings, or custom code that no one fully understands anymore.

Taken together, the point is not which platform will replace which. The real issue is that website management is becoming more complex. WordPress 7.0 is not the endpoint. It is a reminder that a website should not be treated as a one-time build. It should be managed as a system that evolves with content, technology, search, AI, and business needs.
